About
Antonio Capaldo is an Associate Professor of Business Administration at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, S.E.GEST.A. Department of Management, School of Economics, Rome (Italy), where he also holds courtesy appointments as Professor of Strategic Management (advanced course) and of Innovation Management.
He holds a 'Laurea' Degree cum laude and special mention in Business and Economics from the University of Naples "Federico II" (Italy), and a Ph.D. in Strategy and Organization from the University of Bologna (Italy).
He has held research and teaching positions at the following Institutions: University of Naples "Federico II"; University of Bologna; Centre for Corporate Strategy and Change at the Warwick Business School (UK) (as visiting research fellow); Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (CUSH) in Milan and Rome.
Prof. Capaldo's research interests include:
- strategic management;
- embeddedness and strategic networks;
- innovation management;
- design;
- cross-cultural management;
- managerial and organizational cognition;
On the above topics, prof. Capaldo teaches courses and seminars at several Universities and Business Schools.
He regularly presents the results of his research at the Annual International Conferences of major Academic Associations, among which: Academy of Management (AOM), Strategic Management Society (SMS), European Academy of Management (EURAM), European Group for Organization Studies (EGOS); Druid Society.
Prof. Capaldo has published about 30 articles in academic journals, several book chapters, and one book (Strategy, Interfirm Networks, and Relational Capabilities. Cedam: Padova, 2004).
His paper titled "Network structure and innovation. The leveraging of a dual network as a distinctive relational capability" has recently been published in the Strategic Management Journal (2007, vol. 28: 585-608).
For his SMJ paper, in December 2009 prof. Capaldo has been awarded the S.E.GEST.A. Department biennial Research Prize for the best international publication of the years 2007 and 2008.
His work in progress includes the following papers:
- Cross-cultural management research: Reaping the benefits of silos brokering (with Della Piana B. and Vecchi A.). Journal of World Business, R&R (revise and resubmit).
- The complementary effect of partner selection and alliance scope on the innovative performance of R&D alliances (with Messeni Petruzzelli A. and Rolo D.). Presented at the 2009 SMS Conference - October 11-14, Washington D.C.
- The evolution of cross-cultural research in management studies, 1960-2008 (with Vecchi A. and Della Piana B.) Presented at 7th EIASM Workshop on International Strategy and Cross Cultural Management, September 25-26 2009, Helsinky.
- It's how widely you search and from where you get the pieces. How search scope and the origins of knowledge impact innovative performance in R&D alliances (wih Messeni Peruzzelli A. and Rotolo D.). Presented at the 2009 DRUID Society Conference.
- Network governance: Social mechanisms, knowledge benefits, and performance outcomes in joint-design alliances. Presented at the 2008 SMS Conference - October 12-15, Cologne, nominated for the Best Conference Paper Award.
- The governance of design alliances in 'embedded' settings: Evidence from the Italian design-intensive furnishings industry. Presented at the 2008 Design Management Institute (DMI) Academic Conference - ESSEC Business School, Paris, April 14-15.
- Managing networks: The nature and roles of dynamic capabilities (with Lorenzoni G. and Ring PS.). Presented at the 2008 EGOS Conference - July 10-12, Amsterdam.
- Knowledge bases of relational capabilities and their relation to the governance of inter-organizational collaboration (with Lorenzoni G. and Ring PS.). Presented at the 2008 SMS Conference - October 12-15, Cologne.
He has taken (and takes) part in numerous Research Programs founded by the Italian MIUR (Italian Ministry of University and Scientific Research) and CNR (Italian National Research Council).
Between 2001 and 2003 he served as Principal Investigator of a CNR Research Program on: "Network forms of organization in the distribution channel: The case of logistics integration".
Between 2004 and 2006 he served as Principal Investigator of a CNR Research Program on: "The strategic management of interfirm networks".
Prof. Capaldo is a founding member of the EURAM, and a member of the SMS and of the AIDEA.
He has served as a Track Chair, Session Chair, and Discussant in a number of Workshops and International Conferences (SMS, EURAM, DMI, among others).
Prof. Capaldo serves as reviewer for a number of Italian and international journals, such as: Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Operations Management, Research Policy, and Industrial Marketing Management.
He serves as a member of the Advisory Board of "Global Community", Oxford University Press.
He is also a member of the Scientific Committee of ICRIM (International Center for Research in International Management) - CUSH.
